Art Traditions Around the world and How to Incorporate Them In Your Home

A colored in map of the world

Art comes in numerous forms from various parts of the globe. While you might recognize some, there may be new ones you've never heard of or aren't familiar with. Discovering art from diverse cultures and their impact on people's lives is truly fascinating.

So, let's take a deeper dive into some art traditions around the world and find out how you and your family can incorporate them into your home.

Piece of paper folded into origami

Origami - Japan

First stop: Japan. Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Origami comes from the word "oru" which means to fold, and "kami" which means paper. There are so many shapes, animals, and symbols you can fold with origami. One way to incorporate origami into your home is to host some friends over for a Japanese-themed dinner. On each plate, you can place a folded swan or an origami flower to make the meal really feel authentic.

A group of colorful pinatas that are shaped like donkeys

Piñata - Mexico

The piñata is widely recognized in many Hispanic cultures and has gained popularity in the US and globally. Essentially, a piñata is a hollow container available in various shapes, filled with candy for children to break open using a stick. A great way to incorporate one at home is by having a piñata at your next birthday celebration. Just be cautious of the person wielding the stick.

Hands throwing clay on a pottery wheel

Pottery - China

Some of the earliest ceramic artifacts have been found in China, dating back 20,000 years! Did you know clay isn't considered pottery until it's been fired in a kiln at extremely high temperatures? One of the best ways to add this art form to your home is to find your local pottery studio and throw your own clay on the pottery wheel. It's a great way to add a unique vase to your home decor.

Calligraphy - Middle East & East Asia

Calligraphy is the artistic practice of handwriting. It is indeed an art form that requires time to perfect. This art can be seen globally, with significant roots in the Middle East and East Asia. One way to incorporate calligraphy into your home is by painting your family's name and displaying it on the wall. Alternatively, you might be attracted to Japanese or Chinese characters and wish to adorn your home with them. Calligraphy offers a lovely method to introduce some handcrafted art into your living space.

Have these global art forms motivated you to create something new? I would certainly love to discover a local pottery studio nearby and attempt to work with clay. What other art forms from around the world are you familiar with? I'd love to hear about them from you!
